I long for the cool, black spaces

Between the galaxies,

For the hot, blue spots of stars,

For the vast, dark emptiness

Of interstellar space.

I long to be home.

[coming to terms with the brute facts]

I begin life in an empty space

where there are no facts at all!

no knowledge, no memory, no feelings,

nothing! The ignorant mind

spread out into virgin land

upon which the brute facts have

not yet placed the first footprints.

This land is beautiful, and empty,

and clean, and all white and virginal

like the moon or a desert, or a glacier.

I can go wherever I like across this land;

but where should I go?

Where should I go?

The facts begin falling all around me

like tiny snowflakes that do not melt,

and they fall quickly, slowly, silently,

soundlessly, slowly piling up

into mountains and hills, houses and huts,

lakes and forests,

and a world begins to emerge!

For human beings, this world is Paradise.

They love it.

For me, it is another kind of hell.
